Worst Fishing Trip Ever...
VERIFIEDFirst, the questions for this review combine boat and equipment into one rating and captain and crew into anotherโฆ The equipment was terrible, but the boat was awesome! Probably one of the best boats I have ever been on. The captain did not seem to know what to do or where to take us, but the deckhand, โZackโ was great. Hard working kid and one of the most helpful deckhands we have had the opportunity to fish with. With that being said the rest of our experience with โLine Checkโ was far below the 5 star rating shown on there websiteโฆ In fact, I asked the captain at the end of the trip if he thought our catch and experience would be displayed on there site like all of the other fishing photos and stories. This was the first Bay and Jetty fishing trip for us (my two sons and I), all other charters have been with other companies booked for deep sea or off shore fishing. We were looking for something simple that would not take the whole day, with a company that could find the fish and send us home with at least 10-15 trout between three of us. Not an unreasonable expectationโฆ Instead, two and a half hours into our four hour trip and we had exactly ONE fish on the boat!ย The equipment was lousy at bestโฆ The hooks were very small, the lines were set up with corks that drifted constantly away from the fishing areaโฆ We used only shrimp for bait (small shrimp) and frequently lost the bait without the crew noticing the loss and re-baiting the lines. At one point we set anchor next to another boat that was pulling in fish on every castโฆ we were less than 100 ft from them in a large school of bait fish flipping and jumping and did not catch a single fish with our small bait and floating tackle. I am not a captain and I do not know much about jetty fishingโฆ Seems like common sense thoughโฆ Why would a large fish or school of fish stop chasing larger bait fish in a sworm for a measly shrimp? I guess the captain finally realized this and the crew started changing the tackleโฆ Once the change was made our lines started getting bites (2.5 hours in to our trip) and then the rain hit! The captain decided to pull the anchor and move away from the jettyโฆ Upon moving, the anchor was lost and the boat could no longer be set in one spot safely without drifting. This caused the captain to want cancel the rest of the trip stating that we would probably be discounted for the remaining balance. I agreed to this as this trip was not going well and frustration with the crew and equipment had ruined the day. We started on our way back in through the heavy rain and just before arrival the captain (seeing our disappointment, I am guessing) offered to take us to another spot for a last ditch effort to catch somethingโฆ we agreed not knowing the new location would be 15 ft away from the Seawolf Park fishing pier. A spot that has absolutely NO fish and could easily be reached without using a $120,000 fishing vessel. There were at least 20 people on the pier at the time casting to the same spot we wereโฆ All of them not catching anything and probably wondering the same questionโฆ Why is the big, badass boat here fishing from the pier when it can be anywhere else? Once the captain realized what us, the deckhand and the people on the pier already knew (there were NO fish here) we moved again. This time closer to dockingโฆ Only to fish for very small hardhead catfish. Ridiculous and something that we again could catch without spending $500 for the use of a boat and a captain. At this point we decided to give up and end this terrible tripโฆ The captain took this opportunity to pitch sales for the commercial side of the operation and offered us โmarket priceโ on all of the fish we could purchase from Katyโs Seafoodโฆ A kick in the head. A place we are well aware of and visit often with out his recommendation or so called โmarket priceโ discount. Once returning to the dock our THREE fish were cleaned and the balance was paid in full, NO DISCOUNT. We spent a total of $550 with the tip for the deckhand to walk away with less the 2 lbs of fish and the only thing the captain could tell us is that โsometimes you just have bad daysโ. Never for a minute when reading the reviews, looking at the photos and booking this trip with โLine Checkโ did I imagine leaving the boat just to have to stop and buy fish on the way home. In conclusionโฆ Terrible service, Captain cannot find fish and you will pay for there lack of knowledge, but the boat is awesome and the choice in deckhands could make or break the day.
